| | | Brighton Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit | | | The 2011 Brighton Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit added 12 new pieces by seven artists to the exhibit. "American Beauty" by Todd Erickson and "Landscape Sunset" by Jim Lawton, two of the original 2006 Biennial sculptures, were taken down from their location at the former Cobb-Hall site. They were replaced by "Twisted System" by Jim Ignash (you may remember him as the fabricator for "Spiral" on Grand River in front of Tim Horton's) and "Gone Wild" by Robert Sestok. "Winter '05" by Doug Gruizenga was moved from its former location on North Street to one of the spots at Cobb-Hall for a total of four on exhibit there, joining last year's "Spiral the Gate" by Ray Katz. We were very lucky to add Mike Monroe's piece, "It's a Keeper" to the exhibit, which was purchased by the Optimists Club in recognition of their 25th annual Fishing Derby in 2011 and donated to the City.
Three new pieces by returning artist Jeff Bohl are on exhibit at three retail locations (Hush, W4 Signs and HBW Insurance & Financial Services), and we are very excited to include a new piece near the Imagination Station, "Stretch", by first-time artist Bryan Barker! Finally, the Brighton Arts and Culture Commission successfully secured a Michigan Economic Development Corporation Rural Arts Grant and received matching funds from the Downtown Development Authority. With these funds, we were able to commission three outstanding pieces of art from Israel and Erik Nordin from the Detroit Design Center. The sculptures are located in the new pocket park adjacent to the 205 West building at St. Paul and Grand River. The official opening of this year's exhibit is the weekend of August 13-14 in conjunction with the Brighton Fine Art & Acoustic Music Festival in the Municipal parking lot behind City Hall. The Brighton Arts & Culture Commission invites you to take a stroll using the art map available at the new Chamber offices (218 E. Grand River), the CoBACH Building (202 W. Main) or City Hall (200 N. First St.) to find the new pieces and your old favorites.
This activity is supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the City of Brighton Downtown Development Authority (DDA).
